Environmental activists, peasants and Bicolanos today picketed the Korean Embassy in Makati City, demanding the pull-out of Korean investments in the Arroyo flagship mining project in Rapu-rapu Island, Albay province.

Environmental groups and indigenous people demand pull-out of foreign mining companies in Nueva Vizcaya

A day before the on-site hearing in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya by the Congressional Committee on National Cultural Communities, environmental groups, indigenous people and some local government officials from the province held a press conference to register their demand for the immediate pull-out of foreign-owned mining companies, OceanaGold and Oxiana-RoyalCo, from Nueva Vizcaya.

As the year 2006 comes to an end, the Arroyo government, Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (CMP) and foreign transnational mining companies (mining TNCs) are singing their old refrain that mining will bring in billions of dollars of investments and will be one of the major engines of economic growth of the country.
